Throat Chakra Truths

Chakras are part of an ancient Indian Ayurvedic energy system. Although we have chakras outside of our body, we have 7 major chakras within our body running from the top of our head to the base of our spine. Each chakra is an energy centre governing certain emotions, nearby organs and glands.

When a chakra is out of balance the nearby organ may be suffering and we may be experiencing a strong negative emotion associated with that chakra point. For example, the heart chakra, which is located in the entire chest area and upper back, could be out of balance due to unexpressed grief or sadness. Sadness is stored in the lungs and the lungs are located in the area of the heart chakra. The person may even exhibit illnesses associated with the lungs like breathing difficulties, coughing etc.

I want to focus on a chakra that many people feel they know all about - The Throat Chakra. We commonly understand that this charka is predominately about speaking our truth but there is so much more going on with the throat chakra than we realise.  These additional aspects have become more apparent to me over time during my reiki journey.

Throat Chakra Aspects

Communication

Allowing us to communicate effectively, clearly and confidently.  To speak our truth and voice our opinions to others. To be heard and to hear others; releasing the need to talk too much or dominate the conversation.

Creative Self-Expression

An ability to express our thoughts and ideas through art, poetry, music, singing etc.

Safe Vulnerability

Some people have no hesitation when it comes to telling others what they do and don't want but they may struggle with vulnerability as they see this as a weakness. This then impedes the possibility of forming deeper connections with others.

Thyroid Function

The thyroid produces hormones that regulate the body's metabolic rate, growth and development. It plays a role in controlling immunity, heart, muscle and digestive function, brain development and bone maintenance.

Tonsils

Containing a large amount of antibodies, the main function of the tonsils is to fight infection. Forming part of the lymphatic system, they are our body’s first defence against bacteria and viruses inhaled or ingested through the nose or mouth.

Relaxation Response

The vagus nerve plays a big part in the parasympathetic nervous system, the system that moves us into 'rest and digest' as opposed to the 'sympathetic nervous system' which gets turned on when we're stressed. This nerve runs from the brain, down each side of the neck before spreading into the body, connecting the brain, heart and digestive system.

Reiki can powerfully open the throat chakra over time and we can see the major role it plays, not just in confident communication but in relieving stress, fighting infection, creativity and forming deeper connections with others.
