What is Grounding

I’ve just returned from a short break by the coast. Whilst walking from the station to my little Airbnb near Hastings, I turned a corner and was presented with the most majestic view of the sea. I immediately noticed the calmness in my energy and found myself automatically breathing the cool, clean air deeply into my body. I felt peacefully grounded for the rest of my stay.

WHAT IS ‘GROUNDING’

Grounding describes a state where we are fully present and connected to our body. Chemically, our grounded body is in balance and free radicals and inflammation that can lead to disease are easily destroyed.

When we are ungrounded we don’t feel like ourselves, we can feel confused, be unable to focus, our heads can feel full of noise, we can feel anxious or emotionally volatile and we can become like a sponge for the emotions of others, Being ungrounded can also lower our immunity - leaving us prone to illness.

WHAT CAN UNGROUND US

  • Living too much in our heads

  • Living too much in the materialistic/physical world

  • Stress, worry and fear

  • Being constantly surrounded by the EMF emitted by electronic devices

  • Lack of sleep or rest

  • Lack of a spiritual practice or faith

  • Living in a busy city

  • Doing long hours of spiritual practice or healing work on others

  • Lack of exercise or movement

  • Shallow breathing

  • Engaging in low-frequency activities and conversations i.e. gossiping or complaining

  • Processed foods, sugar and alcohol

HOW TO GROUND

There are many ways to ground and bring the body and mind back into balance. Most are really simple and can be practiced regularly.

Be in nature

The Earth and the Sea are filled with negative ions which naturally ground us. Negative ions get rid of free radicals in the body instantly as well as raising our vibration. Scientists have studied the effects of placing our bare feet on grass or hugging a tree and they can see that the EMF count instantly reduces as that earth energy floods our body.

Using Light Energy

Before, during and after healing work on others, before deep meditation or even throughout the day we can take a moment to ground ourselves by imagining a bright light coming from the heavens above into the top of our head, see it filing up our body and going through our legs down deep into the centre of the earth.

Mindful Breathing

A beautiful way to ground ourselves is by breathing deeply into your lower abdomen, the hara point. This not only floods our body with oxygen, we then release more toxins as we breathe out. This type of slow, deep breathing also makes us very present the second we take that deeper breath. It gets us out of our chatty mind and into our body as we become aware of our surroundings.

Foods

Drinking water that contains minerals otherwise known as electrolytes i.e. sodium, potassium and magnesium, helps our body to ground and come back into balance and flushes out toxins. Eating whole foods like seeds, nuts, fruit and vegetables - especially root vegetables, will also ground the body.

Crystals

Some crystals are known for their grounding properties because the naturally absorb EMF and raise our vibration.

Crystals such as :

tourmaline, shungite. amethyst, citrine, red jasper, tiger eye, hematite, fluirite, selenite smoky quartz

Engaging the body

Moving the body means grounds us as we become focused on the body which again gets us out of our heads and into the world around us. It could be tai chi, Qigong, yoga, running, walking, dancing or as simple as stamping our feet on the floor, clapping, tapping the body, stroking the arms or even giving ourselves a big hug. Somatic connection will ground us, particularly if we pair it with deeper, slower breathing.

Whatever grounding method you try, it’s important to ground regularly throughout the day using any or a combination of the above grounding techniques, or you can use your own grounding method if you have one.

Grounding will keep us focused, give us clarity, give our body what it needs to heal, and, more importantly, allow us to be present and not miss a precious moment of this fleeting life.
