What Do Reiki Healers Do?

What Reiki Healers Do and How Reiki Works

A Reiki healer, sometimes called a Reiki practitioner, works with energy to support physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. While many people imagine healing as something that is “done” to them, Reiki works very differently. Reiki practitioners do not force healing or use their own personal energy. Instead, they act as a channel for Universal life force energy.

This gentle energy supports the body’s natural ability to restore balance.

Channeling Universal Life Force Energy

The word Reiki comes from two Japanese words:

Rei – universal or spiritual wisdom
Ki – life force energy

Together they describe a form of healing energy that flows through all living things.

A Reiki practitioner does not create this energy themselves. Instead, they allow the energy to flow through them and into the client. This means the practitioner does not become drained or depleted while offering Reiki.

During a session, the practitioner places their hands gently on or slightly above different areas of the body. The energy then flows to wherever it is needed most.

Supporting Balance in the Body and Energy Field

Many traditions believe that physical and emotional wellbeing are connected to the flow of energy within the body. When this energy flows freely, we tend to feel calm, centred and healthy.

However, stress, trauma, emotional strain or negative thought patterns can disrupt this flow of energy.

Reiki practitioners work to support the restoration of energetic balance. Rather than targeting a specific symptom, Reiki works holistically, meaning it supports the whole person.

Following Intuition During a Session

One important aspect of Reiki is that the energy is considered intelligent. It flows naturally to where it is most needed.

In many cases, practitioners follow a sequence of hand positions during a treatment. However, they may also be guided intuitively to place their hands in certain areas for longer periods of time.

As many Reiki teachings explain, any Reiki is better than no Reiki. Even a few minutes of Reiki can help shift energy and promote relaxation.

Holding a Safe and Supportive Space

Beyond the energy itself, a Reiki practitioner also creates a safe and compassionate environment for healing.

Many clients arrive feeling overwhelmed, emotionally drained or disconnected from themselves. A Reiki session offers a quiet space where the nervous system can relax and the body can begin to release tension.

Sometimes emotional insights or feelings may arise during a session. The practitioner simply holds space for whatever emerges without judgement.

Closing Reflection

Reiki healers do not “fix” people. Instead, they facilitate a healing environment where the body and mind can return to balance naturally.

Through gentle touch, presence and energy work, Reiki practitioners help clients reconnect with a deeper sense of calm, clarity and wellbeing.
