Master Money

A bank note on a pastel pink envelope flat on a table with flowers and stationery items.

For years I was unable to save my money and would always go overdrawn at the end of the month despite numerous pay rises. Needless to say, I avoided looking at my bank account unless it was payday and dreaded opening the post, as the last thing I needed was another bill. Then, almost a decade ago, I made a decision to become the master of my money and vowed that I would no longer allow money to master me.

Everything changed...

Money is energy so if you hide from it, avoid it or fear it, it will always be elusive to you. It's not going to show up where it's not welcome and if it does show up, it's certainly not going to stick around for long.

Not wishing to sound like Martin Lewis here :-) but I just want to share a few of the practical and energy-based things that helped me change my relationship with money, as it might help if you also have 'too much month at the end of your money.'

8 ways to help you master your money

  • Don't hide from money

Check your bank account every day so you know exactly where you are despite any fears you might have around this. This is key to mastering your money. The fear soon goes.

  • Take control

Open your post as soon as you get it so there can be no surprises.

  • Bless your bills

Give thanks for being able to pay your bills immediately.

  • Auto-Save

Set up a standing order to transfer the amount you want to save as soon as you get paid. Don't wait to see what you have left at the end of the month. Even if it's £10 a month, if saving isn't a priority, it won't happen. Get into the habit of saving aka 'keeping' money.

  • Save for a Purpose

Open a savings account and name it according to its purpose eg 'Holiday Fund'. Pay into it automatically each month via standing order. This way you're not struggling to find the money when the time comes.

  • Get Cancelling

Review your regular credit card expenses, standing orders and direct debits. You could be paying for things you no longer use or need.

  • Negotiate

Contact the insurance companies you have policies with, your mobile phone company, your cable company and tell them you would like to reduce your monthly expenditure to £x. Ask them nicely what they can do. If they can't help then check comparison sites for a better deal.

Any monthly expenditure saved from the previous two steps can be paid into your savings!

  • Affirm

'I am the master of my money.'
