Feeling Unworthy? Learn the Truth

No matter what we've been through, what others have said, or what we believe about ourselves - we are and always have been, worthy. Yet, somewhere along the way, we started to believe otherwise.

The Truth About Worthiness

If I’m holding a little baby in my arms, is that baby worthy? I asked this question to my Reiki 1 students recently and they looked at me in dismay. 😅 I can’t recall the conversation verbatim but it went something like this…

Students: ‘Of course they are… they’re a baby.’

Me: ‘…but they haven’t done anything to be deemed worthy.’

Students: ‘They don’t need to, they just are worthy.’

Me:  ‘but why?’

Students ‘…because they exist.’

Me: ‘Exactly!  You were once a baby. You were born worthy. It wasn’t given to you by anyone. You were and still are worthy simply because you exist.’

Why We Lose Our Sense of Worthiness

As we grow up, we absorb messages from family, teachers, society and culture that tell us we need to be more to be considered worthy.

It happens so subtly that we often don’t even notice it. Maybe you were called ‘too sensitive’ or ‘a show off’ as a child, so you learned to suppress your emotions and your talents. Perhaps you were told you had to work twice as hard to succeed, so you equated exhaustion with value. Over time, these messages enter our psyche and chip away at our belief in our own ‘enough-ness’.

Seeking External Validation

Many of us learned that approval from others meant we were doing something ‘right’. We’ve spent years trying to earn our worth through overworking, perfectionism, or people-pleasing. We’ve chased success, approval, and validation, hoping they will finally make us feel worthy but worthiness isn’t something to be achieved, it’s something to be remembered.

Reclaiming Your Worth

Our worth is not up for debate. Just like a baby, we don’t have to do anything to be ‘worthy’, we simply are.

Take a moment to think about what would change in your life if you fully believed in your worthiness.  How would you show up differently? What dreams would you finally give yourself permission to pursue?
