Triggers

The back of a stressed woman with her fingers interlocked and held against the back of her head.

When we set an intention to start our inner journey with a desire to change, grow or become better in some way, observing what triggers us will be crucial to our success.

We often see our triggers as an annoying interruption to our progress when in fact, their appearance is very much an integral part of our growth. In fact, in my own personal experience, this need for observation is never ending but it is something we should welcome rather than seek to avoid.

Our triggers can take many forms, it might be a person who annoys us, makes us angry or demands our attention in some way. It could also be Universal cycles like the full moon, retrograde planets, menstrual cycles or even the weather. Whatever it is that is causing us to move out of alignment, we need to become aware of it and get curious so we can change our response.

PEOPLE TRIGGERS

The most common triggers are caused by other people and so this has the biggest potential for growth.

In this case, we can try following the discovery process below:

  • What is it about their behaviour we find triggering?

  • What emotions are coming up?

  • Does the emotion we feel connect back to a past experience?

  • Are they being a mirror - Is this something we also do ourselves in some way, even if it's on a smaller scale?

  • Are we allowing the behaviour by not setting clear boundaries?

  • Are we judging the behaviour as wrong or inferior based on our own 'high standards', forgetting that everyone's upbringing and path is different?

  • What are we making this behaviour mean?

  • Is this meaning actually true?

  • Can we find any points of compassion for the person?

By following the above process we are opening up to the possibility of inner change and inviting in new perspectives that will start to soothe or even dissolve our triggers.

This process allows us to exist in the world in a more mindful, compassionate way, reminding us that what goes on outside of us does not have to destroy our inner peace. 💜✨
