Is Overthinking Stealing Your Peace?
One of the things I hear all the time is, “Gwen, I just can’t meditate… my mind goes off in a hundred directions,”. I always smile because this is exactly what the mind is designed to do. The mind wanders, comments, spirals and makes noise. This is the nature of the mind but it’s often taken as a personal failure.
The real practice isn’t about forcing the mind into silence but about learning
how to gently guide it, again and again. Without that guidance, the mind can easily pull us into patterns that sabotage our peace, our confidence and even our relationships.
Here are a few of the most common ways the mind tries to “protect” us but ends up creating stress instead:
OVERTHINKING
When we loop the same thoughts over and over, trying to find a perfect answer that doesn’t exist.
Example: “What if I make the wrong decision?” becomes hours of mental spiralling.
CATASTROPHISING
When the mind jumps straight to the worst-case scenario.
Example: One mistake at work turns into “My whole career is falling apart.”
GENERALISING
When we take one experience and make it define everything.
Example: “That idea didn’t work… nothing ever works for me.”
MINDREADING
When we convince ourselves that we know what others are thinking.
Example: “She didn’t reply so she must be annoyed with me.”
ASSUMING
When the mind fills in the blanks with stories rather than facts.
Example: “I wasn’t invited - they probably didn’t want me there.”
If we don’t know how to work with our mind, these patterns run the show. They drain our energy and make peace feel unattainable.
The truth is, you can learn to redirect your mind and choose what you focus on. It doesn’t require force; it just requires the right guidance. When you have the right support, cultivating a positive mindset stops feeling like a battle and becomes a compassionate daily practice
