Stop Sabotaging Yourself! - Part 2

In Part 1 we looked at how deep rooted beliefs can consistently sabotage a particular area of our lives such as money, relationships or career, making us feel like we have no control in this area even though all other aspects of our lives are working fine. We looked at some examples of self-sabotage and some possible causes. If you missed Part 1 you can click here before reading on.

 

The key to turning this area of consistent failure into one of consistent success is to find a way to permanently replace the relevant deep rooted beliefs that haven't been serving us with beliefs that do serve us by connecting to and communicating with our subconscious mind.

 

 

 

 WHAT IS A BELIEF?

 

Our beliefs are like files stored on the hard drive of a computer. These files store information and memories about us and what we perceive to be our reality. When we are born the hard drive is pretty much empty but fills up quickly between the ages of 0-8 with information gathered from what we see and hear from our parents, family, friends, religion and the media.  

 

Deep rooted beliefs formed as a result of either repetition or some extreme emotional association like love, pain, fear or anger are stored in our subconscious mind whose primary role, by the way, is to protect us. This explains the self-sabotage that can occur when we find ourselves in a situation that previously resulted in an extremely negative experience. Your subconscious wants to protect you and so reminds you of the past experience to stop you moving into what it perceives to be ‘danger’. This then results in you taking an action or non-action which brings the situation to an end in some way and gets you back into your 'comfort zone'.

 

As mentioned, we are most receptive to learning new things between the ages of 0-8. During this stage learning is fast and is received by the subconscious mind through the five senses of sound, sight, smell, taste and touch. This is why children find it easy to learn new languages or to play musical instruments. Belief files are constantly being downloaded, saved and replaced in the subconscious mind as children experience and learn about life.

 

As we get older however, it becomes harder to learn new things and to therefore save and replace the old files or ‘beliefs’ in our subconscious mind that are not serving us. In this post we’ll look at the various modalities, tools and processes available that can help us change our limiting beliefs at this powerful subconscious level.

 

 

THE POWER OF AFFIRMATIONS

 

  • Abraham Hicks, authors of 'Ask and It Is Given'  state that ‘beliefs are just thoughts we keep thinking’.  Our habits are formed through practice and it's been scientifically proven that it takes us approximately 30-40 days to form a new habit, be it a habit of thought or a habit of behaviour. It makes sense then that if we consistently think a different thought, that thought will eventually become our dominant belief.

 

  • However, simply repeating a positively stated sentence over and over again in our mind may not be enough to transform a belief. Remember that to affect a subconscious belief we have to powerfully associate it with one or more of the five senses so saying it out loud is more effective than saying it in our heads.

 

  • The existing belief may be associated with a strong negative feeling e.g. fear so to replace it we need to associate or ‘anchor’ the new belief with a strong positive feeling such as love, happiness or excitement.

 

  • Visualising the new belief for 30 days will also be a great thing to do. Enhancing your visualisation so it incorporates all five senses will be even more powerful.

 

HYPNOSIS

 

  • It's easier to access our subconscious mind when our brain is in what is known as ‘Theta’ state. This is the state we are in when we are in deep meditation or at that point just before we go into deep sleep. This is when our subconscious mind is most receptive to learning and retaining new things.

 

  • Getting the brain to Theta is the starting point for many modalities that are able to change our deep rooted beliefs.

 

  • Self Hypnosis is one way to achieve this state by gently getting to a point of deep relaxation and then implant the new beliefs.

 

  • There are many Hypnosis videos on YouTube covering a variety of topics. Find one where the Hypnotherapist has a quiet, soothing voice that will allow you to relax. I would advise listening to the complete video first whilst fully awake to ensure you resonate with what is being said before you actually use it.

 

 

SUBLIMINAL MESSAGES & BINAURAL BEATS

 

  • Binaural beats are sound waves that vibrate at frequencies which correspond with our brainwaves at various stages of activity or inactivity. In order to get the brain to Theta the music needs to be at a frequency of between 4-7 Hz.

 

  • Adding a hidden layer of audio containing positive affirmations makes this method even more powerful. This is referred to as 'subliminal messaging'. Although we can't hear what's being said our subconscious mind can hear it. We all know that dogs can hear high frequencies of sound that cannot be heard by the human ear, the subconscious mind works in the same way and is aware of everything.

 

  • Again there are many videos available for free on YouTube but for me Kelly Howell, founder of BrainSync, is one of the best in this area. Kelly has been working in this field since the 80’s and has a wide range of downloadable audios covering practically every topic including Wealth, Relationships, Self Love, Weight Loss, Self-Confidence, Success, Creativity, Stress, Gratitude, Sleep and even Learning Power for those studying for exams.

 

  • The audios can be listened to repeatedly anytime but ideally should be listened to using headphones whilst you fall asleep for 30 consecutive days. You can view the affirmations being used subliminally by going to her website.

 

 

PSYCH-K®

 

  • PSYCH-K® is a modality originated by Rob Williams in the 1980’s.  In his book 'PSYCH-K: The Missing Piece / Peace in Your Life' he describes how PSYCH-K allows subconscious beliefs to be changed quickly and easily using several techniques.

 

  • Limited beliefs can be changed in minutes rather than days. PSYCH-K® obtains permission from your higher self then uses various, unique balancing methods, such as engaging both hemispheres of the brain, to communicate with the subconscious mind.  

 

  • Muscle testing is pivotal to ensuring the new belief has been successfully saved in our subconscious.
