Overthinking About Thought
Updated: Mar 3, 2021

Have you noticed just how similar many of the spiritual teachings about the Mind are? That's because Buddhism, Mindfulness, The Law of Attraction, Dr Joe Dispenza, Eckhart Tolle, The 3 Principles (which I've recently been exploring) and many others all contain the same simple Truth. The truth that we are all love, well-being and worthiness at our core and our suffering is mostly caused by false thought and overthinking.
As babies we have no judgements, we live in the moment and are excited about the unknown world around us. So what changes? We, unfortunately, are born into a world based on judgements so we soon learn to label and over-think about ourselves and everything around us. We hardly ever sit in the present moment, choosing instead to think worrying thoughts about the past or the future and we are taught to think judgemental thoughts about our negative emotions, sometimes leading to strong self-loathing.
An emotion is said to be thought manifested. In fact, everything, both matter and non-matter, has arisen from thought so it makes sense that this is where the change needs to start. Once our thoughts are kinder, our emotions and life experiences will follow.
To re-connect to True Thought
Set an intention to take your place as the master of your thoughts.
Take complete responsibility for your thinking and avoid blaming yourself or anything external.
Become aware that you can choose what you think about anyone or anything.
Become aware that your 'negative' thoughts about yourself, others and the world are not 'True'.
Sit with your thoughts in an impartial, non-judgemental way.
Move away from past/future thinking by becoming very present.
Becoming deeply present will allow your thoughts to soften and pass (even if it's an angry thought)
Do this regularly.
Your internal thermostat will naturally return back to truthful thoughts of love, wellbeing and worthiness. Notice today, how much of your thinking is about the past or future. Set your alarm for 5 mins and try being completely in the present moment. It's hard at first...but worth practising.
