Intermittent Fasting

Updated: Nov 22, 2022

Intermittent Fasting

I've been intermittent fasting for several months now. Although I've always been fairly healthy I have seen some amazing improvements in my energy levels and my physique there are several benefits to intermittent fasting that have been scientifically proven, so it's worth considering this approach if you would like to improve your physical and mental health. Of course, do consult your doctor first. WHAT IS INTERMITTENT FASTING? Intermittent fasting is something that many religions have advocated for thousands of years before it became a fitness industry 'trend'. If you were like me, I would spend most of my waking day eating. I'm a bit of a grazer so I would eat my 2-3 meals a day and then I would snack in between. I like to have a little of everything so one minute I might have some lovely chocolate the next I'd be knocking back a grass shot. 😂 Regardless of what I was eating my body was spending most of its energy digesting food. With intermittent fasting, you shorten the window during which you're eating which leaves a longer window during which you're not consuming food. This basically gives your body a break and allows it to use that energy for other, more beneficial processes like repair and healing, allowing us to live a longer and healthier life. The great thing is, intermittent fasting doesn't have to mean not eating anything for 2-3 days a week, although this may be suggested to reverse more serious health conditions, instead, it's recommended that we have a period of between 12-16 hours of not eating and this includes whilst we sleep! Whoo Hoo!! 🙌✨ This aspect made it sooo much easier for me to adopt this method and it works beautifully. The last time I eat at night is 8 pm and then I don't have anything until 10 am the next day. This gives me 14 hours, sometimes longer if I go to the gym, of not consuming anything but maybe water and lemon or herbal tea in the morning. I used to carry a bread roll to the gym with me just in case I felt dizzy but I was fine. I also reminded myself of the fact that I'd stuffed my face the day before so I'm not exactly 'starving'. 😂 To be honest, up until 7 years ago, I naturally ate this way. I never felt like eating at 7 am so would go to work, which included a 20-minute walk to the station and a 15-minute walk across London Bridge and I would eat brekkie when I arrived. However, constantly hearing that breakfast was the most important meal of the day I changed my eating habits and my little muffin top tummy was born. So let's look at what happens when we intermittent fast. THE SCIENTIFICALLY-PROVEN BENEFITS

  • Hormonal and cellular changes include balancing insulin levels and increasing the production of Human Grown Hormone which helps the body recover from disease, removes waste from our cells, reduces excess fat, increases bone density, promotes hair and nail growth, promotes cell repair and improves stamina.

  • Reduces excess fat, particularly around the liver and other organs.

  • Boosts your metabolic rate.

  • It lowers the risk of Type 2 diabetes as it reduces insulin resistance.

  • Reduces inflammation in the body which is often the cause of many diseases, and painful joints.

  • Reduces oxidative stress which can cause ageing and lead to chronic disease.

  • Great for heart health as it lowers blood pressure, lowers high cholesterol and balances blood sugar levels.

Intermittent Fasting
  • May prevent cancer and reduce the side effects of chemotherapy.

  • Increases the growth of new neurons in the brain.

  • Better brain health due to all of the above, preventing things like Alzheimer's and stroke.

So you can see why I was keen to try it and why I'm keen to share it with others. There's lots of information out there if you'd like to look into it further. I love Dr Eric Berg who does short videos on Youtube about the topic but as mentioned, do check with your doctor first.

If you've tried it or are doing it, let me know how you're finding it! 💖✨
