In Dale Carnegie's book 'How to Stop Worrying and Start Living', he details 10 things we can do to end the self-destructive cycle of worry:

  1. Live in Day Tight Compartments - Only worry about what’s happening today because that is all you can control.

  2. Sleep - Try to rest before you get tired, everything feels worse when you are exhausted. Taking regular naps to rest and nourish the brain allows more intelligent thinking and other ideas about the situation to come to you.

  3. Co-operate with the inevitable – There are some things you cannot control. Accept them by looking at them square in the face and plan how you can deal with them if they happen so you can move away from worrying about them.

  4. Try and face your problems logically – Ask yourself; What’s the very worst that can happen? Prepare to accept the worst. Think of ways to improve on it.

  5. Count your blessings not your trifles – We often have more to be thankful for than we can worry about. Moving into gratitude will also raise your vibration and bring you more things to be grateful for.

  6. Don’t worry about the past – What is done cannot be undone but we can choose the perspective we take when looking back at the past. We can also choose whether we continue to let the past affect our present. The idea is to learn the lessons from our past experiences and move forward with this new wisdom.

  7. Keep busy – Activity breaks the cycle of worrying thoughts and therefore ceases anxiety. A bored mind will seek out things to worry about.

  8. Use the law of averages to outweigh your worries – 90% of the things we choose to worry about will never happen. So ask yourself how likely is it that this thing will occur.

  9. Remember that unjust criticism is often a disguised compliment. - This is the main reason why we fear being judged. Understand that it is usually the fears and problems of the critical person coming out and this has nothing at all to do with you.

  10. Create happiness for others – Research shows that doing good deeds can activate neurotransmitters in the brain that are associated with positive feelings and decrease stress/anxiety. Being of service to others also takes our focus away from ourselves.
