Healing Your Inner Child: Reparenting

We all have an inner child and that younger version of ourselves is still a part of us. Our inner child still feels the pain and fear of any hurt, trauma or event we’ve suffered in the past that was left un-soothed by either ourselves or another, such as our parents or guardians. Any strong negative emotion that was not processed at the time, has been integrated into our body, ready to show itself again whenever we encounter a similar situation.

Any unprocessed emotion where we felt unloved, not heard, not seen, rejected, not enough, judged, shame or guilt is still there and can come up in our adult lives to be healed. However, instead of taking time to heal it, we allow it to sabotage us. The past event may even seem small now when we reflect on it but to our inner child, it was a big deal. At the moment when they felt alone, our inner child internalised that event and the associated emotion. These un-soothed emotions now show up in our adult life, leading us to feel fear, anger, sadness or to act immaturely in response to someone’s actions. 9 times out of 10, it’s not the actual current event that is triggering us but the subconscious reminder of a past hurt that is causing our current reaction.

SO HOW DO WE RE-PARENT AND HEAL OUR INNER CHILD? We first have to stop looking for others to love, validate or accept us. This usually leads to more pain and rejection. Your inner child is looking for YOU to provide those things. It's looking for YOU to re-parent it, no one else. We have to re-parent our inner child by giving it the love, understanding and compassion it craves. The hurtful emotions will then transform into deep self-love and we will stop acting out the past. As mentioned at the beginning, the inner child is still a part of you so when you soothe your inner child you are soothing and loving you. 💖🙏🏽
