Turmeric - The Anti-Spice

Updated: May 14

Turbo Boost Your Healthy Eating Game

It's safe to say that I've always been a bit of a foodie. Rather than seeing healthy foods as something to be tolerated if you want to avoid the doctor or if you want to lose weight, I actively seek healthy foods and dishes that are colourful, aromatic and flavoursome so that eating them is a real pleasure. When I eat, I savour each morsel and feel grateful for the vitality and nourishment my food gives to my body.

Having just returned from an amazing trip to St Lucia, the home of my lovely mum, I've been inspired to up my healthy eating game by adding healing spices such as Turmeric, healthy oils like coconut and pulses like lentils to my diet.

I discovered that Turmeric, an Indian spice commonly used in curries, is packed full of antioxidants and vitamins resulting in a wealth of health benefits. Whilst in St Lucia, my sister prepared some beautiful tuna fish cooked with onion, lime juice, garlic and red peppers in a delicious turmeric broth and I was hooked! When I returned to my mum's I was astonished to find that mum has been growing it her garden for years and she uses it regularly in her kitchen.

So why call it the 'Anti-Spice'? Turmeric is anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-carcinogenic, anti-mutagenic and has anti-inflammatory properties. It contains curcumin which has anti-cancerous properties. The spice also helps with Alzheimer’s, strokes, heart disease, arthritis and even diabetes. Basically, it's a healing powerhouse! To top it all, it's also delicious and goes extremely well with all meats, fish and most vegetables whether used as a seasoning or in sauces. You can even add half a teaspoon to your favourite juice or smoothie! It's not peppery like chilli just really flavoursome. It's so easy to add this amazing spice to your diet. You can find organic turmeric powder online or at any good health food store.
